A customer needed a Spanish-style wedding card for her friend's wedding. I looked up some Spanish tiling work and though, ooh, these would make perfect papercuttings! My client loved the idea and I set to work, picking out colors that evoked the drama and beauty of Spanish art--blue, black, yellow, red.

I have been able to find almost nothing on the artist. I know that she is based in Toronto, Canada and learned the art as a young child from her grandparents.


Created using only rice paper, scissors and a knife, this definitely gives me something to aspire to.

I love the grace and energy of birds. I love "fire" colors: red, orange, yellow, blue, black. This lovely photo combines both and was taken by an eighteen-year-old Romanian photographer. Normally I am NOT a fan of painted wood mixed with finished wood, but this new furniture from German designer Valentin Loellmann blows me away. A piece of driftwood bumped into Heather Jansch one day on an English beach. Artistic inspiration combined with her life-long love of horses inspired her to create these amazing sculptures, which she now crafts for a living.

Just thought I'd shre some adorableness with you. DC, or Darn Cat, is our beloved fluffy cat and she loves it when we play board games! She has a box fetish, and when we have an empty box open she will find it within 1.37 seconds, occupy it, and squirm around inside it before taking a nap. Every time. Without fail. CUTE!!

I love the pattern but feel like the photo was about eh worst choice I could have made. C'mon, I mean a desert rock as a snowflake?!

Oops.

Oh well, I had fun making it. Maybe I'll spray paint it black or something. Now that would be cool.

I totally agree with that sentiment from Dudecraft's (aka Paul Overton) recent article "Hands On" (published on Make &amp; Meaning). 

It's a sad truth that as school budgets are being slashed, so are many hands-on classes. Everything now is textbook and tests.

This is my first truly complicated ONE-PIECE papercutting attempt. I going for a fish shape with lots of ocean designs inside like bubbles, seaweed, shells, little fish, starfish, a sea urchin, etc. You can see that I am about halfway done.


I'm pencil drawing on one side to map out my designs and also make sure I don't cut too close to the edge and compromise the strength of the piece.

The ridiculously nice weather (88F in April?!) has brought the whole county out of hibernation and into the pond store. The weeping cherry trees, daffodils, crocuses and water plants are all blossoming and growing, the fish are coming out of their underground tunnels and splashing at the surface of the ponds, and the fountains and waterfalls are flowing.

Mr. Kitty was a stray found out by the highway that lays in front of Garden State Koi &amp; Aquatic Center where I work. Many years ago I worked at Borders as the Paperchase Manager. My inventory was shipped to me using an unnatural amount of rubber bands; by the end of each day my lower right arm was surrounded by over 100 of them! No one wanted them, so instead of tossing them I decided to make an entire outfit out of office supplies. First up was a rubber band skirt.

Me neither til I came across this website earlier today, filled with templates and instructions for a snail-mail letter, envelope and seal all in one--write your letter on one side, fold inside-out along the pre-marked lines, seal with a stamp placed in the upper right corner, address and you are good to go!

I'm printing one out right now to test it. This is so cool!

I'm not usually a fan of photo manipulations. Unless they're done really, really well, they look tacky. Guess it's just the traditional artist in me, but if you are going to go through all that trouble, why not just start from scratch and draw/paint/make everything exactly the way you want it?

Last weekend was super productive. I spent almost all my waking moments with my favorite brush in hand, humming along with Sarah McLachlan and occassionally looking up to see Caleb joining Manning in a victory celebration (Giants beat the Raiders bad, 44-7, it was sweet).

Black and white is a hard medium to work with and it doesn't give you pretty colors to fall back on when your composition or values suck. On the bright side, this emphasis on composition and value can be your greatest ally when you're really good at it. Take Andrea Brito, for example.
