Toasted Coasters (now say THAT three times fast!!)

>> Saturday, May 15

OK so they're not really toasted, per say, but they do look remarkably like toast. These cork toasters from designer Patricia Naves of Oiti are just brilliant, combing aesthetics with practicality in a rare sort of genius. I wouldn't mind a loaf of this myself!

Bookshelves Made of ... Books?!

>> Tuesday, May 11

If you aren't following Dornob, you should be. Every day they post the latest in design that pushes the boundaries of the known. I love seeing all the pictures, and even though many of the designs are not "my cup of tea" they are fascinating and inspiring. Take for examples, the two latest posts on household items made from old books.

Artist Jim Rosenaeu takes discarded books and turns them into shelves. Fancy that--bookshelves made of books!

Then there's the Italian designer Gartenkultur with his lovely book planters. I would like one, wouldn't you?

British artist sculpts full-size horses from driftwood

>> Monday, April 26

A piece of driftwood bumped into Heather Jansch one day on an English beach. Artistic inspiration combined with her life-long love of horses inspired her to create these amazing sculptures, which she now crafts for a living.

I totally want one.

I found out about her work via Crooked Brains--if you're not following the Crooked Brains blog yet, you should be. Seriously.

Beautiful water photo manipulations

"Waterose" by Marcelo Fedrizzi of Platinum Studios

I'm not usually a fan of photo manipulations. Unless they're done really, really well, they look tacky. Guess it's just the traditional artist in me, but if you are going to go through all that trouble, why not just start from scratch and draw/paint/make everything exactly the way you want it?

Sand Animation and Sand Painting

>> Saturday, October 17

Sand painting (the artistic manipulation of sand on back-lit glass often set to music) is a world-wide phenomenon that I was recently introduced to by a co-worker. These featured artists hail from the United States, Netherlands, Hungary, Ukraine, Israel, Mexico, France and Palestine/Iraq. Take a look.

The art began with Caroline Leaf, a student at Harvard University, in 1968. She hung a camera from the ceiling so that it looked down on a lightbox, which she covered with sand collected from a local beach. The light below the glass highlighted the exposed areas, and by manipulating the sand with her fingers Caroline created her first animation, entitled "Sand, or Peter and the Wolf." She later went on to create many animations, including my favorite of hers based on an Eskimo Inuit folk-tale, "The Owl Who Married A Goose."

Amazing Art From Around the World: A Paper Castle

>> Thursday, September 10

[Click photo to enlarge]

A Japanese art student named Wataru Itou created this stunning beauty. It took him all four years of his undergraduate studies to design, fold and put together this masterpiece, including the lighting and moving train--all made entierly of paper!

Art like this just inspires me to create with more passion and creativity. I often think it can't be done until I see someone else master a technique or idea. And then I think, we'll, if they can do it, why can't I?!

Thanks, Wataru. Your work is beautiful.

See more photos of the castle here.
